History

Compass Point, the nearby Sengkang MRT/LRT station, and the condominium complex were all created as part of an integrated development. The shopping center, which cost S$230 million to build, opened for business on 1 August 2002. The mall opened as the North East line’s first sizable shopping center.

The mall was Singapore’s first suburban shopping mall with a learning concept before the renovations. On walls and railings, some educational panels and posters display intriguing facts based on topics that are updated regularly. The mall’s developer, Centrepoint Properties, proposed the learning theme for the shopping mall in response to feedback from the general public and a survey of residents conducted by international property adviser DTZ Debenham Tie Leung Limited. Sengkang New Town is home to many young families.

The mall’s estimated retail space was 269,098 square feet (25,000.0 m2). Four floors and a basement got used for retail space.

The five vital continents got represented by themes on each of the five floors of the retail center, which were titled Oceania (basement storey), Asia (ground floor), Europe (second storey), The Americas (third storey), and Africa (third storey) (4th).

The mall was formerly known as 1 Sengkang Mall because of a Facebook competition where the person with the most “likes” won $1000; however, the management changed the name to Compass One after learning that many preferred the previous moniker.

On 1 September 2016, Compass One reopened with 180 specialty tenants, a new interior design, and an updated internal layout. Levels 3 and 4 gets partially taken up by the Sengkang Public Library, which started operations on 18 March 2017. At Level 4, there will also be a play deck with a wet and dry playground.
