About Dhoby Ghaut Green

Dhoby Ghaut Green is a Singaporean urban park locates across from the Park Mall and near the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station. Today, the 1.1144-hectare park serves as a hub for arts and cultural events and community activities and for users to explore the surrounding urban park setting. The park’s main attraction is a sculptural open-air Amphi theatre in the centre. The Amphi theatre serves as a showcase for the Demonstration Project for Architectural and Urban Design Excellence. The Amphi theatre also acts as a gathering place for the general public to engage and enjoy the open environment. The performance stage locates in the lowest section of the Amphi theatre. A gravel area in the park’s west serves as a platform for street bazaars and markets.

History

In URA’s Public Space and Urban Waterfront Master Plan 2003, Dhoby Ghaut Green was chosen as a park and envisioned as a “City Room” for community interaction and involvement within the city. The park opened to the public on October 24, 2009. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on September 18, 2021, that a garden at Dhoby Ghaut Green might as a public place devoted to Singapore’s women as part of a proposal by the Singapore Council of Women’s Organizations accepted by the government.

Recreation

Soo K. Chan of SCDA Architects designed the park. After winning the Designer of the Year title in Architecture and Urban Design at the inaugural President’s Build Award, the nation’s top prize for excellence in design, Chan was commissioned by the Urban Redevelopment Authority to envision and design the area. Web Structures was in charge of structural engineering.

Visit the Visual Arts Centre in the middle of the city in a verdant park. An art gallery and a 498-square-metre studio space located within the centre. Ongoing art exhibitions, professional art courses, and other art education programmes will entice young and old visitors.
