Orchard Road, a major tourist destination and the island’s most prominent commercial district, had a $40 million makeover in 2009. Flooding occurred in the early 1900s, but the Stamford Canal was deepened and widened to alleviate the problem. The 1970s were a golden period for the area around Orchard Road, with pioneering buildings such as Plaza Singapura, C.K. Tangs, and the Mandarin Hotel built. Orchard Road became a lively one-way route in 1974, starting at Orange Grove Road and Tanglin Road and ending at the intersection of Prinsep Roadway and Bras Basah Road.
River Valley is bordered on the west by Nathan Road, Cable Road, and the Jervois Road portion of Crescent Road. It gets located south of Orchard Boulevard, Devonshire Road, Eber Road, and north of Ganges Ave Road.
River Valley takes its name from its location on the Singapore River’s northern bank, bordered by tiny valleys. The Oxley region was home to Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, and Oxley Road is today noted for its high-security private houses. River Valley is a famous eating location for residents seeking Hainanese chicken rice and Nasi Padang, which can find in pre-war storehouses along River Valley Road.
