About Wisma Geylang Serai (WGS)

Public areas, a Geylang Serai Community Club plaza, and an extensive pedestrian network within WGS will improve accessibility and connectivity to other developments within the precinct and bring the vast array of amenities and services within WGS to the neighbourhood. The People’s Association, Ministry of Social and Family Development, Ministry of Health, National Arts Council, National Heritage Board, and Ministry of National Development have all worked jointly on this project. In earlier Singapore, the Malay Settlement began in Geylang Serai. The word “Wisma” can render a structure, a neighbourhood, or a home. Wisma Geylang Serai gave that name to convey the character and purposes of the municipal centre.

Development

The double-pitched roof of the development draws inspiration from traditional Malay homes and the nearby Geylang Serai Market. The design also exhibits a modern flair in its spatial planning, using cues from the “serai” plant to create “ketupat” and “serambi” on stilts. It incorporates and weaves facilities and multipurpose spaces to create a seamless design. Geylang Serai’s particular personality highlights an urban character strengthened by its excellent design.

Green Mark and BCA Award Features

On March 20, 2017, WGS received the BCA Green Mark Award (PLATINUM) in the heading “Green Mark for Non-Residential New Buildings Version 4.1.” Emphasizing natural ventilation in public areas like the Secondary Street and the public plaza is one of WGS’s environmentally friendly features. In the architectural and interior design of the building, the civic centre also integrates architectural components from the former Malay Village.
