It is frequently known by the acronym HGDEP. The bus assembly plant Comfort DelGro Engineering (CDGE) situates inside the depot. At McKenzie Road Depot, the bus assembly factory began operations with SBS in 1977 or 1979, building Leyland Atlantean buses from complete knock-down (CKD) kits. In 1983, the facility moved to Woodlands Depot (SBS), and on December 1, 1994, it ultimately settled in Hougang Depot. The Volvo Olympian, Volvo B10TL, and Dennis Trident buses for SBS and SBS Transit, the Volvo B9TL (CDGE) and Volvo B9TL (Wright) buses for SBS Transit, are all domestically assembled buses for SBS and SBS Transit that made here. Since January 1, 1983, SBS Transit has had a 38-year lease on the property.

The SBS Transit Bus Captain Development Center, where new Bus Captains receive training, is also located in Hougang Depot. As a result, it’s common to see training buses in the depot and driving about the neighbourhood.

Modification:

To make up for the loss of parking space at the South end of the depot, Hougang Bus Depot expanded to the North and East to make room for the building of the Kim Chuan Depot Extension. Hougang Bus Depot’s modifications finished in the latter part of 2017.

Quek & Quek Civil Engineering Pte Ltd was given Contract 8813 for Modifications to Existing Hougang Bus Depot for S$21.4 million in June 2016.
