Developing Green Agriculture Technology

According to the United Nations, the world population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, with Asia accounting for over 55 percent of that. Food demand from rural regions and decreasing farmlands is on the increase as a result of this unprecedented pace of urbanisation. This necessitates increasing food production in urban areas, closer to where demand is, in order to mitigate the negative effect that activities such as food transportation, packing, and so on have on the environment.

Farming in the City

Cities are made up of both developed and undeveloped areas. Traditionally, urban developed areas were never considered for agricultural uses, but with the ever-increasing urban population density, finding and assigning sufficient land for farming has become impossible. Even in densely populated locations, innovative agricultural concepts must be applied to overcome land and resource limits and produce food locally. Vertical farming, rooftop farming, and other techniques assist to overcome space limits, while LED lighting and recirculating aquaculture may aid boost productivity in cramped locations like balconies, roof terraces, and even inside. Moving manufacturing closer to where it is consumed decreases the logistics’ carbon impact and provides food security for all residents.

Farming in a Group

Farmily is a similar effort that believes in giving the community with healthful food and sustainably produced goods. They combine farming, design, and contemporary technology to create food resilience in the community by producing foods in underutilized places. These types of initiatives aim to promote sustainable agriculture by teaching the public about local food production and increasing the local economy. Many additional advantages of urban farming include the availability of healthy food, more green space, and community cohesion.

Citiponics, for example, is working on new methods to grow locally grown veggies effectively within the confines of urban settings. In Singapore, they created the Aqua Organic SystemTM (AOS), a vertical growth technology that maximizes agricultural sustainability. Urban farming is becoming more accessible and practical because to innovations like the AOS, which make the most of the limited resources available. To optimize crop development, interior surroundings may also be managed utilizing technology such as Sustenir Agriculture’s indoor Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) systems.

From small-scale rooftop gardens in densely populated regions to larger-scale output, community farming may take place on a variety of dimensions. At 22,000 square meters, Thammasat University’s rooftop garden in Bangkok is Asia’s biggest urban rooftop farm (236,806 sq-ft). The Green Roof at Thammasat University addresses climate change by combining contemporary landscape design with traditional agricultural ingenuity. The use of a green roof, urban farming, a solar roof, and green public areas elegantly integrates architectural and landscape design components. The green roof is designed to look like the terraced paddy fields that previously covered the now-urbanized region. By attracting pollinating birds and insects, the use of native plant strains enhances biodiversity in the area and creates a microclimate surrounding the farm.
