The Orchard Point commercial-cum-residential complex, built by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and completed in June 1983, is among the notable landmarks visible in this photograph of Orchard Road. The carved stone reliefs on the Orchard Plaza retail centre’s front, which were installed by property mogul Ng Teng Fong’s Far East Organization in 1981, are designed to resemble those on the Hilton Hotel, another of Fong’s construction projects along Orchard Road. In the 1830s, nutmeg plantations encircled Orchard Road, a little country lane in the centre of Singapore. Later, pepper farms, fruit tree orchards, and spice gardens started to sprout nearby. The Singapore Cold Storage opened a grocery store along the route in 1905, becoming one of the first big retailers to set up shop in the neighbourhood. Orchard Road gets not developed until the 1960s, and by the 1970s, it had become the popular tourist and shopping district it is today.
