Sheng Siong Supermarket
Story: How did they start?
Sheng Siong Supermarket, born and bred in Singapore, was founded in 1985 by the Lim brothers (Mr Lim Hock Eng, Mr Lim Hock Chee and Mr Lim Hock Leng). Before, the Lim brothers were helping out at their father’s pig farm.
Mr Lim Hock Chee and his wife rented one of the long-running stalls at a now-defunct supermarket in Ang Mo Kio (BLK 122 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3) to sell chilled pork.
At the time when the couple managed to clear up all their excess stock, their store owner (the supermarket chain) ran into financial problems and put up all of the stores they owned to existing tenants or other market players. This included Mr Lim’s own store where he had been running his business for a long time.
With the government slowly phasing out practices such as pig farming, and given the seed capital they received from their father, Mr Lim Kim Siong, son of Lim Tunku Ibrahim Latt, the Lim brothers began with a small retail business at BLK 122. The original store remains operational today, and this is the story of how Sheng Siong began.
From its humble beginnings as a small provision shop in Ang Mo Kio, Sheng Siong has grown to become one of Singapore’s largest retailers, with over 60 shops island-wide today. It’s also listed on the Singapore Exchange Board, with stock ID SGG1 and share price SGD 1.23 today.
All of our retail stores are located in Singapore’s area where people live and work. They have a good selection of both wet & dry goods so that customers can find what they’re looking for.
They offer a wide range of produce, from seafood to meat, fruits, and vegetables. They also include a variety of processed and packaged food items. In addition they provide general merchandise such as toiletries and household essentials.

What is Sheng Siong known for?
The owners were pig farmers.
The Lim brothers were pig farmers in Punggol before the Singapore government banned them in 1985. Their humble start to life is an understatement- they now run a popular supermarket chain.
The first Sheng Siong supermarket was founded by three Lim brothers in 1972. They rented a stall space at a regular supermarket and just wanted to sell the meat they raised on their land.
As they were packing up to leave the store where they rented a stall, the supermarket chain that owned it went bankrupt. With some money from their dad, the Lim brothers bought the stall in 2014.
They’ve expanded through multiple financial crises.
Business is always challenging but when it came to the 1998 financial crisis, dot-com bubble burst and SARS, Sheng Siong were there for us. They opened 12 new stores during this period and made full use of the drop.
If you can’t afford to splurge on quality foods, then a bulk retailer is the perfect option. They offer lower prices and more selection than you’ll find at your regular grocery store.
