Reverend James Thoburn of the South Indian Conference formed the Singapore Methodist Church in India in 1885 as a missionary venture. Reverend William Fitzjames Oldham moved to Singapore to establish the Mission’s groundwork. In 1886, Oldham established the church’s first English-language boys’ school, the Anglo-Chinese School. Later, the construction of two girls’ schools in 1887 and 1888. In addition, the Mission constructed a clinic and housing for homeless children. The Toa Payoh Methodist Church was from 1968 as a missionary collaboration between Wesley Methodist Church and St. Andrew’s Cathedral.
History:
The project began with a free clinic at Block 109, Lorong 1, Toa Payoh. It allowed sharing the gospel with people who came for treatment. The inaugural service was by Rev. Micheal Wong, pastor of the Wesley Methodist Church, in 1969, with 12 non-Christian patients. When the Clinic closed in late 1969, the group, which included new converts and Christians from other Methodist churches, relocated to a shop in Block 4, Lorong and Toa Payoh. Rev. Micheal Wong was formally named full-time pioneer pastor the following year.
