UOB was established on August 6, 1935, as the United Chinese Bank, by Datuk Wee Kheng Chiang; the name was changed in 1965. In its early years, UOB primarily served the Fujian community, but it has expanded in strength and significance through the years.

Participation in the Community
UOB is involved in the community in a variety of ways, with an emphasis on children, education, and the arts. In 2007, the company started a volunteering program for its employees. UOB has generated cash for its specified beneficiaries via the UOB Heartbeat Run/Walk. Since 1982, UOB has hosted the famous Painting Of The Year Competition and Exhibition.
