In the 1960s, the school was known as Kallang Integrated Primary School and was a merged school between Kallang Government Chinese School and Kallang Government Malay School. The school is located in the Civil Area of Cantonment, and its current Headteacher is Mrs Manokara Sugunavathi. Cantonment Primary School is a government co-ed single session school with classes starting at 8 am. With a population that continues to grow, the school has achieved numerous rankings, and achievements, and has a cut-off point for entry. Tao Nan School was founded in 1906 by local Chinese philanthropists of the Singapore Hokkien Association, Tao Nan School has a rich history and pioneering spirit. It was the first modern Chinese school in Singapore and one of the earliest of its kind in the Straits Settlements. As Singapore’s oldest primary school, Tao Nan has consistently evolved to meet the changing needs of its students. In 1916, it became the first school in the Straits Settlements to use Mandarin instead of dialect as the medium of instruction. Moreover, Tao Nan School was also the first Chinese school in Singapore to adopt modern subjects such as geography, history, and physical education in its syllabus.
