Architects applied sustainable regionalism as the main architectural response to a unique site. The project would see the conservation of the former Joo Chiat Police station, together with the addition of newer structures. Traditional Peranakan patterns and motifs were interpreted through a contemporary lens serving both aesthetic and functional purposes. Peranakan inspired motifs also adorn the perforated metal ceiling that lines the pedestrian canopy at the site’s main entrance. In 1854, Reverend Mother Mathilde arrived in Singapore from Penang and remained as Mother Superior of the Convent for the next 20 years. The sisters got to work and within 10 days took in orphans, did needlework to support themselves and taught 14 children. Soon the number of pupils increased and the school became well-known. In 1894, there were 167 pupils. By 1904, the number had increased to 300. Secondary education began in 1905. Under Mother Hombeline the expansion programme continued.
Katong Convent was established in 1930 as a private Primary English School with an enrolment of 197 pupils, one of 11 CHIJ schools in Singapore. In 1958, in order to cope with the growing demand for places in the school, a branch was constructed in Opera Estate and a few of the Primary school staff were then transferred to the new convent. The new school was named CHIJ Opera Estate. In 1988, work on the project to build a “new school” at Marine Terrace began. The relocation of CHIJ Opera Estate to Katong in 1990 also marked another milestone in the history of the school; for the new name adopted – CHIJ (Katong) Primary, is also reflective of the merger with the primary section of Katong Convent.
The ceremony of the blessing of the school took place on 16 November 1990.
In the early 20th Century, Singapore’s Chinese dialect groups began to set up schools for primary education. Tan Boo Liat, leader of the Hokkien community and Tan Tock Seng’s great-grandson, proposed founding a modern Hokkien school. The idea was received enthusiastically, and donations from the Hokkien community followed. Prominent businessmen and philanthropists such as Lee Cheng Yan, Low Kim Pong, and Tan Kah Kee also donated to the cause which led to the school being founded on 18 November 1906. The Hokkien Huay Kuan agreed to provide an annual subsidy to Daonan Xuetang or ‘Tao Nan Study Hall’, as named by Chen Baochen, a tutor of Puyi, the last Emperor of the Qing Dynasty.
Tao Nan School was the first Hokkien modern school in the Straits Settlements and one of Singapore’s first modern Chinese schools. The early batches of students studied Mandarin, History, Geography, and Confucian classics, and did three hours of weekly Physical Education – all of it in Hokkien.
In 1909, the school was the first Chinese school in Singapore to welcome students from every dialect group and new firsts were yet to come. Tan Kah Kee suggested that the school move to house the growing student population in 1909. He contributed $2,000 while sugar tycoon, Oei Tiong Ham, donated $10,000 to acquire the land for the new campus. With $40,000 raised by the Hokkien community, construction began in 1910, and Tao Nan School moved to 39 Armenian Street when construction was completed in 1912.
In 1916, Tao Nan School became Singapore’s and the Straits Settlements’ first Mandarin-medium school.
The school was closed during the Japanese Occupation from 1942 to 1945 when the Japanese took over the school.

was founded in 1939 as an all-boys’ school at 60 Kim Yam Road. The school was guided by its philosophy “Excellence in Education for All” and admitted students from different strata of society. The school was officially opened by Mr Joseph Francis Conceicao, the then Member of Parliament for Katong, on 14 March 1969. The school later moved to its current location at 61 Dakota Crescent in 2005 and was officially opened by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim on 20 July 2007.
Broadrick Secondary School celebrated her 45th Anniversary on 24 April 2015 which was graced by Minister for Communications and Information and Minister–in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, an alumnus.
Geylang Methodist School (Secondary) began in 1924 as Geylang Methodist Girls’ School when it was founded by Rev Lloyd Sullivan, together with Mrs Chia Han Kiat and Miss Walker, who were members of the Methodist Church. With a pupil enrolment of 27 girls, lessons were conducted in the sanctuary of Geylang Chinese Methodist Church.
With God’s grace, we continued to expand, becoming a full school and in 1951 our first batch of pupils took the Cambridge Examination (the equivalent of the GCE ‘O’ level Exam) three years later.
The school song was composed in 1975 by Ms MJ Gruber, with music arranged by Ms Susheela E Daniel, daughter of Mrs SA Daniel, the Principal then.

Grand Dunman Neighbourhood
Marine Parade is well served by commercial facilities including Marine Parade Public Library, Roxy Square and Katong Shopping Centre.
East Coast is home to many a landed property, and while there are plenty of types to choose from, the distinctive Peranakan shophouses and terrace houses that have been restored to their former glory are the jewels of the neighbourhood. That said, the neighbourhood has its share of modern designs, especially in the vicinity of Joo Chiat.
For those who prefer apartment living, there are plenty of condominium developments in East Coast that will suit a variety of lifestyles and budgets. The condominiums run the gamut from the older (and oftentimes more spacious) developments such as Bayshore Park and Mandarin Gardens nearer to Siglap all the way to the newer and shinier (yet more space-constrained) offerings around Telok Kurau and Amber Road.
Residents of East Coast find their shopping needs more than adequately met by the shops and stores in Parkway Parade, 112 Katong and Siglap Centre as well as by the smaller, more eclectic shops in the shophouses along the side roads and lanes. More than just clothes, bags, shoes and stationery, the range of shops here include services from healthcare (for both human and pets) to grooming (also for both humans and pets).
On a practical note, Parkway Parade houses the larger supermarket chains (Cold Storage and Giant), home good stores (Best Denki and Harvey Norman), as well as the major department store (Isetan). Lastly, Citibank, DBS, HSBC and UOB have branches here too.
