Story: How did they start?
1973 was a wondrous year for Singapore. They proudly held their first Chingay Parade and their doors to the Singapore Zoo were opened. The year of 1975 was also the beginning of NTUC Welcome when a co-operative supermarket opened at Block 192 in Toa Payoh Lorong 4. The first customer welcomed this store and henceforth, it became more popular.
Singapore was struggling during the 1973 oil crisis. People were unclear whether there would be a global food shortage and prices of everyday items went up.
In order to fight inflation and stabilize food prices, NTUC Welcome began selling food and essentials to the public at affordable prices. They continue to do this today with groceries that are both affordable and of high quality.
To this day, the Toa Payoh supermarket covers 10,000 sq. ft of floor area and is open weekdays from 10am-10pm & weekends from 9am-6pm. The newly opened Bukit Ho Swee branch will soon follow suit. The NTUC Welcome supermarket chain had its start in 1977 with eight stores spread all over Singapore. These markets can be found in housing estates like Tanjong Pagar, Marine Parade, and Jurong.
Apart from NTUC, there were also other unions that set up their own co-operatives to run supermarkets. One of these was the Singapore Employees Co-operative (SEC).
NTUC Welcome and SEC merged to form NTUCFPC in 1983, with the goal of instilling a sense of common identity and corporate culture. Their first step was to introduce a uniform for employees, followed by developing housebrand products for customers.
1980s: more and more Singaporean women are joining the workplace. Nowadays, working women also look for everyday items in supermarkets instead of wet markets. We are always exploring ways to improve and we have decided to expand our product range to include easy-to-prepare foods and the latest combination pack innovations.
FairPrice’s Housebrand has been around for a long time and was first introduced in 1985. For years, it has brought better value to our customers, like cooking oils such as canola which are one of our best-selling products.
After we introduced our initial range of products, we thought to ourselves, “we need to provide as much value to our customers as possible!” We then broadened our product line-up to include household goods and clothing so you don’t have a tough time sorting out what you want.
Fairprice made the leap into the next decades by developing new retail formats. The emergence of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in Singapore in the late 1980s prompted FairPrice to locate stores near or at MRT stations and suburban shopping complexes. The success of the Cheers convenience stores started in the 1990s, leading to the establishment of FairPrice Extra and FairPrice Finest stores in 2000.

Why is Ntuc FairPrice Supermarket the grocery store of the future?
NTUC FairPrice is giving the public a glimpse of how the future of grocery shopping might look. One experience they are demoing is giving shoppers more flexibility by allowing them to access their favorite groceries via both online and offline options.
Mr Wong talked to SP PRO about innovations that Singapore’s biggest online grocery platform FairPrice will soon be revealing. When Dorscon oranges were introduced, the demand for online groceries skyrocketed. FairPrice saw as much as five times the normal peak demand. But they dealt with it by relying on their own team.
With the help of AI, companies can handle logistics themselves. They also have many offline distribution channels and branded stores. They have a central warehouse model, and an automated warehouse that services both near and far customers.
For those of us who live in the hustle and bustle of city living, hypermarkets provide a way for you to get quality groceries without having to go out of your way. They’re available all over Singapore, no matter where you are.”
Their hyperlocal delivery system means you can always be sure that the produce you order will never get old or rot before it gets delivered to your doorstep. He said one of the barriers when grocery shopping online is that customers are unsure whether what they ordered still has a long shelf life.
Today, there’s a lot of manual picking in the store because we just took an existing store with a fixed layout. But if we were to design a brand new ‘dark store’ from scratch, it would be expected that we would need to use a more automated system.
We may need to automate work in the future to keep prices low and affordable, which is something we want as an enterprise committed to Singaporeans.
FairPrice didn’t just stop with its online platforms. They started experimenting recently with an upgraded in-store concept called “Scan-and-Go.” In stores that offer the “Scan-and-Go” feature, customers are able to pick their products, use their phones to scan and pay for the items, and then simply walk out with their purchases. There are no long queues, no waiting time, and almost no contact whatsoever. The system also uses A.I. with machine learning algorithms to determine trust scores.
This is done to ensure you’re not leaving without paying for the items that were scanned. You need to scan a QR code before you leave and this device will determine how customer-worthy you are, as well as any items you might have tried to steal.
If you’ve never been to the store and bought expensive wines before, a salesperson will come over and show you their selection.
After a few more visits we should realize that you’re a trustworthy person, and it’ll be ok if you don’t pay on each visit.
Early in this decade, the e-commerce market has been steadily growing. In Singapore’s online grocery store market, FairPrice has had to compete with giants such as Alibaba and Amazon.
We are a startup and all we do is AI, which allows us to be faster than other, less specialized companies.
And we only have to worry about Singapore, whereas the other players have to think about what their markets are, as well as all their businesses they need to care for. And then I’m sure they’ll be making some compromises in terms of their priorities. Whereas our singular priority is to service Singapore for groceries in the best way.
