Mandai new bird and rainforest park

Introduction

When the Mandai Rejuvenation Project conceived, it was important for Bird Paradise to represent our dedication to running interactive, open wildlife parks that put animal care at the forefront of all we do. The walk-through aviaries at Bird Paradise have carefully themed and choreographed to allow visitors to go even closer to some of the most beautiful bird species in the world. A cutting-edge avian hospital and a sizable breeding facility are among the best support facilities available. It convinced Bird Paradise to give our organisation, which is devoted to conserving wildlife, the ideal platform to advance our educational programmes, capacity-building projects, and significant efforts to protect endangered bird species throughout the region.

The 17-hectare Bird Paradise, the first of the planned wildlife parks at Mandai Wildlife Reserve to open to the public, is scheduled to do so in the second quarter of 2023.

The Mandai Wildlife Group will manage Singapore’s brand-new bird park, Bird Paradise, which will immerse guests in a vibrant environment and be home to 3,500 birds from over 400 avian species. Bird Paradise, built to inspire exploration at every will welcome guests into immersive and realistic mixed-species habitats.

They can explore eight sizable walk-through aviaries representing various global biomes, including dense African rainforests, South American wetlands, Southeast Asian paddy fields, Australian dry eucalypt forests, and more. It is positioned as a distinctive location for nature and animal activities by combining all of Singapore’s wildlife parks and other nature-based experiences into the Mandai Wildlife Reserve. It will give Bird Paradise, which has an avian hospital, and the Mandai Wildlife Group’s other operating parks more opportunity to become premier institutions for animal conservation, instruction, and research.

A journey through realistic environments

The new bird park intended to highlight ecosystems influenced by various ecologies and habitats, bird behaviour in its natural setting, and the distinctive avian adaptations present in all species. The expansive aviaries, which replicate the realistic ambiance of many regions with regionally relevant features, vegetation, and bird species, will transport visitors to various locations around the world as they stroll and explore them. Birds’ melodies and natural behaviours, such as flying, feeding, nesting, and foraging through underbrush, will bring the environments to life.

The leader in avian conservation

In Winged Sanctuary, a section created for birds of high conservation significance, including critically endangered species like the Philippine Eagle, Vietnam Pheasant, and Negros Bleeding-heart, some of the park’s most threatened species will house. The 24 per cent of the species in Bird Paradise will be vulnerable species, the large proportion of the species list needing human care in a single zoological park, building on Jurong Bird Park’s ex-situ and in-situ conservation efforts for globally threatened avian species.

Nutrition

It’s no small task to meet the dietary needs of almost 19,000 animals from over 900 species. Different species and frequently different members of the same species have different nutritional needs. Our committed Wildlife Nutrition Team collaborates closely with the Animal Care Team to create food for our animals nearly as found in the wild. Supplements are administered as necessary to suit the unique dietary requirements of different animals. Ensure the right amount of nutrients consumed are regularly evaluated and adjusted.

The best treatment possible

Exhibits carefully planned to offer opportunities for challenge and choice, as well as to promote natural behaviour. A well-designed exhibit area is essential for improving the inhabitants’ health and fitness. Encourage inter-species interaction and keep the animals socially stimulated house various species. The care team has scheduled enrichment activities for the majority of our animals. It done to make sure students constantly expose a range of challenges and activities, thus “keeping them on their toes” and motivated!

Free ranging orangutan

Enhance animal welfare while under human care requires a dynamic process called enrichment. Based on the biology o species and even the personalities of the individual animals chosen. Our animal care team puts a great deal of time and attention into creating enrichment activities encourage the animals to act while working their minds and bodies. Although there are many various types of enrichment, food-related activities are the most popular.

Education In Stress-Free Healthcare

Our Animal Care Team puts a lot of work into training the animals they look after to take voluntarily in routine care and medical procedures. The need for anaesthesia and physical restraint is stressful for the animals and the people caring for them. Using positive reinforcement training, animals compelled to participate in routine care and non-invasive medical treatments. Over the years, more animals have successfully trained to part freely in these activities has been made possible by the link between the animals and the caring members of their care team.

Animal Welfare

The Veterinary Team provides more than just clinical case diagnosis and treatment to provide the best care for our animals. Pathology, health surveillance, and preventive medicine are essential to providing top-notch medical care. We have established programmes for structured health monitoring. As part of preventive medicine and health surveillance, parasite tests and vaccinations performed on mammals and birds. Additionally, we are one of the few zoological institutions with a group of veterinary pathologists on staff. Lessons learned from the dead can help us improve the care we give to the living by allowing us to study and diagnose diseases in deceased animals. The Veterinary Team may contact our network of experts for support to address complicated medical cases.

Animal Care for Seniors

To better oversee the health of the increasing number of senior animals in our parks, we developed animal care plan in 2017. By delaying the development of these age-related disorders, our animal care plan aims to increase the animals’ “healthspan” and ensure that ageing animals continue to live happy healthy lives. Included are all animals that complete 75% of their lifespan while being cared for by humans. Patients enrolled in the senior animal care plan receive a specific diet, routine veterinary checkups, and personalised activity plans.

Global conservation of species

Our local zoo is a part of a global network of zoos that contribute significantly to maintaining thriving populations of animal species, many of which gravely endangered in the wild. We work together with other zoos on internationally managed species programmes as one of the ways we help prevent the extinction species. To maintain genetically sound animal populations under human care, animal transfers between zoos for breeding based on genetic compatibility. To further support wildlife conservation, we are committed to growing our participation in the over 100 internationally managed species programs.

Each programme for managed species overseen by a species coordinator who acts as a “matchmaker.” A species coordinator offers suggestions for the movement of specific animals between zoos for breeding and collection planning based on welfare concerns and genetic compatibility. To accomplish the specialised task of species coordination, we have been methodically enhancing the skills of our animal care employees. To help prevent the extinction of the corresponding threatened species, we now have 11 staff members working as species coordinators with zoos.

400 types of birds at Singapore’s brand-new bird park

The second quarter of 2023 will see the opening of a brand-new bird park, according to Mandai Wildlife Group.  More than 3,000 birds from more than 400 avian species will live in Bird Paradise, a new 17-hectare park. Eight sizable walk-through aviaries represent several global biomes, including the Australian dry eucalypt forest, Southeast Asian paddy fields, African rainforests, and South African wetlands, allowing visitors to learn more about birds.

With the bamboo labyrinth serving as a significant food source for the animals residing in the habitat, the landscaping has benefits beyond visual appeal. Birds like the rare Milky Stork and the critically endangered Baer’s Pochard, the terraces also offer a distinctive ecology. Penguin includes the Northern Rockhopper Penguin, King Penguin, Gentoo Penguin, and Humboldt, will soon call the state-of-the-art indoor habitat at Penguin Cove home.

The new Bird Paradise will continue to preserve the history and legacy of the current bird park while paying homage to Singapore’s first wildlife park by keeping iconic features like the heliconia collection. It will do this by being guided by the knowledge and experience gained from managing the 51-year-old Jurong Bird Park.

Bird Preservation

In Winged Sanctuary, a section created for birds of high conservation significance, including critically endangered species like the Philippine Eagle, Vietnam Pheasant, and Negros Bleeding-heart, some of the park’s most threatened species will house. The 24 percent of species in Bird Paradise will vulnerable species large proportion of species listed need human care in a single zoological park, building on Jurong Bird Park’s ex-situ and in-situ conservation efforts for globally threatened avian species.

By October 2022, there will be about 1,400 trees planted at the West Arrival Node. Visitors’ first point of entry into the new Bird Paradise and Rainforest Wild is the West Arrival Node.

The new bird park will house more than 20 species of hornbills, making it the large living genetic reserve in the world. These new species, like the Sulawesi and Knobbed Hornbills, provide further opportunities for research and conservation efforts. With more than half of the species identified as vulnerable in the wild, songbirds from Southeast Asia will also be an area of focus for conservation at Bird Paradise. Over 75 ex-situ managed breeding programmes will represent additional species are closely related to field conservation operations in the area. It is in line with the park’s objective being a globally recognised hub bird conservation and study.

History

The Mandai Wildlife Group announced in 2016 that Jurong Bird Park would move to a much larger park at Mandai Lake Road by 2020. It combines the three current animal parks and a new Rainforest Park to form a combines natural and wild animals precinct known as the Mandai Wildlife Reserve. It declared in 2021 that the park’s replacement in Mandai would be called Bird Paradise. [6] The announcement that Jurong Bird Park would close on January 3, 2023 to complete its relocation to Bird Paradise at Mandai made in 2022.

The Mandai Wildlife Group is committed to preserving nature, safeguarding wildlife, and protecting the environment. All contacts with the Group incorporate conservation education to motivate action for a better environment. The Mandai Wildlife Group is in charge of maintaining Mandai Wildlife Reserves wildlife and natural area in Singapore. It is home to renowned wildlife parks that introduce tourists to the world of wildlife. The Mandai Wildlife Reserve Singapore Central Catchment Nature Reserve is the focus of an ambitious project led by The Group. It will combine five wildlife parks with unique nature-based activities, green public spaces, and an eco-friendly resort.

River Safari renamed

The name “Wildlife Reserves Singapore” has been changed to “The Mandai Wildlife Group” as part of a new corporate identity that will include both the operations of the zoological park and the ongoing work at the Mandai precinct. The newly combined location will house all of Singapore’s wildlife parks and give them a fresh look. To more accurately describe the experience it offers, the River Safari has renamed “River Wonders,” while the names of the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari have not changed. It will later welcome “Bird Paradise,” which will take the place of the former Jurong Bird Park. It will also introduce “Rainforest Wild,” which will provide explorations within a habitat of a rainforest.

It also revealed a new “Masterbrand Mandai,” which reflects the zeal and dedication for a thriving, biodiverse world, along with its new corporate logo. The creatures cared for by nature the environment themselves served as inspiration for the new brand universe, which continues to arouse guests’ sense of awe. The company’s new slogan, “Come to life,” is a call to action to conserve the environment by making wiser decisions every day an invitation to get in touch with nature and experience the wonders of animals at Mandai Wildlife Reserve.

According to group CEO Mike Barclay, the organisation dedicated to the vision of thriving human and animal communities coexisting in healthy ecosystems. As a result, in pursuing this vision, we put more of an emphasis on community support, sustainable living, and the promotion of nature-based climate change mitigation strategies than just protecting wildlife and their habitats. Our rebranding comes at a crucial moment when mitigation climate change and reversal of the planet’s devastating biodiversity decline are urgently required.

With the introduction of new platforms like the website, social media channels, eTickets, and park signage, along with a change in the corporate attire, the roll-out the new brand identity and logos additional visual assets has started.

Mandai area set for major redevelopment

With the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, and River Safari already present, the Mandai area has the potential to develop into a precinct of nature-themed attractions for education and recreation, according to him. Any development of the location “will also need to be sustainable and sensitive to its natural environment,” he continued. Before any plans finalised, an environmental impact assessment will conducted. Wildlife Reserves Singapore oversees the three already-existing attractions Jurong Bird Park.

Mandai area set for major redevelopment

The first indications of plans to develop the Mandai area appeared sometime in 2007, which led the Nature Society (Singapore) to publish a report in November of that year outlining their concerns. The STB was looking into a project for eco-tourism south of the Mandai Road area and on both sides of Mandai Lake Road. Involved were two plots of land: a 15 ha piece between Mandai Road, Mandai Lake Road, and the Western Catchment Reserve’s border; and an 18 ha patch between Mandai Track 15 and the Western Catchment Reserve up to the military firing range. The project would damage the region as a forest ecosystem or habitat, creating a parkland environment, leading to the loss of a range of ecological niches, according to the society’s list of concerns, which also included the area’s fragmented and deteriorated state.
