The 24 per cent of the species in Bird Paradise will be vulnerable species, the large proportion of the species list needing human care in a single zoological park, building on Jurong Bird Park’s ex-situ and in-situ conservation efforts for globally threatened avian species.

Work on this project increased my understanding of rainforests, their diversity, and the animal species that live there. According to the Vice President of the Architecture Group at CPG Consultants, it was an opportunity to work on a project that will allow the public to experience harmony with nature and confident that it will be successful. The experience and new knowledge enabled our multidisciplinary team to design and plan the rainforest park in a way that is sensitive to nature and the nearby Central Catchment Nature Reserve, as well as recreating environments that are as authentic as possible. The new Bird Park will have nine aviaries with free-flying birds set against various backgrounds, including marshes, bamboo forests, and rainforests, and one of the largest collection of birds in the entire world. Additionally, it will contain a breeding and research centre to guarantee the continuation of globally threatened species like the Bali Mynah and Black-winged Starling.

Popular elements of the previous Jurong Bird Park will carry over to the new park, including a waterfall and a specially created theatre for bird shows. In the meanwhile, visitors can get varied perspectives from treetop canopies and forest floor walkways in the Rainforest Park, which will highlight the flora and animals of Southeast Asia’s rainforests. The Night Safari will also have a brand-new stadium which may indicate the arrival of a brand-new spectacle.

Rainforest Wild

Bigger and better: Jurong Bird Park is moving!

Many people were disappointed to see the original Jurong Bird Park close, but don’t worry—the birds will soon be in a better location! The new bird park in Singapore will have enough room for interactive exhibits with room for the birds to fly.

Over the years, more animals have successfully trained to part freely in these activities has been made possible by the link between the animals and the caring members of their care team. 

Animal Welfare

The Veterinary Team provides more than just clinical case diagnosis and treatment to provide the best care for our animals. Pathology, health surveillance, and preventive medicine are essential to providing top-notch medical care. We have established programmes for structured health monitoring. As part of preventive medicine and health surveillance, parasite tests and vaccinations performed on mammals and birds. Additionally, we are one of the few zoological institutions with a group of veterinary pathologists on staff. Lessons learned from the dead can help us improve the care we give to the living by allowing us to study and diagnose diseases in deceased animals. The Veterinary Team may contact our network of experts for support to address complicated medical cases.

Animal Care for Seniors

To better oversee the health of the increasing number of senior animals in our parks, we developed animal care plan in 2017. By delaying the development of these age-related disorders, our animal care plan aims to increase the animals’ “healthspan” and ensure that ageing animals continue to live happy healthy lives. Included are all animals that complete 75% of their lifespan while being cared for by humans. Patients enrolled in the senior animal care plan receive a specific diet, routine veterinary checkups, and personalised activity plans.

Global conservation of species

Our local zoo is a part of a global network of zoos that contribute significantly to maintaining thriving populations of animal species, many of which gravely endangered in the wild. We work together with other zoos on internationally managed species programmes as one of the ways we help prevent the extinction species. To maintain genetically sound animal populations under human care, animal transfers between zoos for breeding based on genetic compatibility. To further support wildlife conservation, we are committed to growing our participation in the over 100 internationally managed species programs.

Each programme for managed species overseen by a species coordinator who acts as a “matchmaker.” A species coordinator offers suggestions for the movement of specific animals between zoos for breeding and collection planning based on welfare concerns and genetic compatibility. To accomplish the specialised task of species coordination, we have been methodically enhancing the skills of our animal care employees. To help prevent the extinction of the corresponding threatened species, we now have 11 staff members working as species coordinators with zoos.

History

The Mandai Wildlife Group announced in 2016 that Jurong Bird Park would move to a much larger park at Mandai Lake Road by 2020. It combines the three current animal parks and a new Rainforest Park to form a combines natural and wild animals precinct known as the Mandai Wildlife Reserve. It declared in 2021 that the park’s replacement in Mandai would be called Bird Paradise. [6] The announcement that Jurong Bird Park would close on January 3, 2023 to complete its relocation to Bird Paradise at Mandai made in 2022.

River Safari renamed

The name “Wildlife Reserves Singapore” has been changed to “The Mandai Wildlife Group” as part of a new corporate identity that will include both the operations of the zoological park and the ongoing work at the Mandai precinct. The newly combined location will house all of Singapore’s wildlife parks and give them a fresh look. To more accurately describe the experience it offers, the River Safari has renamed “River Wonders,” while the names of the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari have not changed. It will later welcome “Bird Paradise,” which will take the place of the former Jurong Bird Park. It will also introduce “Rainforest Wild,” which will provide explorations within a habitat of a rainforest.

Mandai area set for major redevelopment

With the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, and River Safari already present, the Mandai area has the potential to develop into a precinct of nature-themed attractions for education and recreation, according to him. Involved were two plots of land: a 15 ha piece between Mandai Road, Mandai Lake Road, and the Western Catchment Reserve’s border; and an 18 ha patch between Mandai Track 15 and the Western Catchment Reserve up to the military firing range. The project would damage the region as a forest ecosystem or habitat, creating a parkland environment, leading to the loss of a range of ecological niches, according to the society’s list of concerns, which also included the area’s fragmented and deteriorated state.
