Need To Know About The Bugis Neighbourhood

Bugis Neighbourhood used to be a trading area for local merchants and traders before the British arrived. Bugis are seafaring people that live in the Indonesian region of South Sulawesi. The Chinese name for the area, “or “white sand,” is unconnected to the Bugis and comes from the low sand mounds discovered there during the early colonial period. Both names refer to the historic waterway that runs through it, the Rochor Canal, via which the Bugis used to trade.

Today’s Bugis Neighbourhood is nothing like those of the past. Bugis Street, the heart of the excitement, has been cleverly merged into Bugis Junction, a large shopping complex. The roadway is transformed into an inside place with a glass value ceiling, allowing shoppers to shop.

Eat

As a melting pot of ethnicities, the Bugis Neighbourhood boasts an abundance of delicious cuisine. If you’re staying in Bugis, you should go to Kampong Glam and taste the nasi padang at Rumah Makan Minang or Warong Nasi Pariaman. In the morning, stop by YY Kafei Dian on Purvis Street for butter and kaya spread over a thick bread sliced in half (supposedly Hainanese kaya toast) with a cup of hot kopi-c. Chin Chin Hainanese Eating House’s Hainanese pork chops and Yet Con’s Hainanese chicken rice are well-known. Saveur, French meaning flavour, is a few doors away and serves French cuisine at reasonable pricing.

Shop in Bugis

Although Bugis Junction is the sole significant shopping mall in Bugis, Raffles City Shopping Centre, the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, and Suntec City Mall are all within walking distance, as is Plaza Singapura in Dhoby Ghaut. Apart from these retail malls being homogeneous and appealing to shoppers for their comfort and familiarity, smaller shopping malls such as Albert Complex, Fortune Centre, and Golden Landmark Shopping Complex provide a more eclectic and unpredictable range of stores.

Learning in  Bugis

Apart from Stamford Primary School, Bugis does not have many mainstream educational institutions for children and early teenagers. The neighbourhood isn’t suited for families, but it might be ideal for freewheelers. The School of the Arts, a pre-tertiary arts school in Dhoby Ghaut, and Singapore Management University’s city campus are nearby. Raffles College of Higher Education, Singapore’s largest education enterprise and a specialist in business and design courses, is also located nearby Clarke Quay. Private schools in commercial areas like Peace Centre have turned the area into something of a private education hub, providing a variety of courses.
