All you need to know about the Paya Lebar Methodist Church

The Methodist Church in Singapore founded the Paya Lebar Methodist Church in 1932. However, the Methodist Church purchased a block of property near Boundary Road to build a school in 1916,  when the Methodist presence in Hougang first appeared. The Paya Lebar English School opened its doors in 1918 and conducted lessons until 1929 when it relocated to a shophouse on Upper Serangoon Road. In the same shophouse, the Methodist Church established the Paya Lebar Methodist Church in 1932. The current church gets built on the site at Boundary Road in 1938. The new building gets finished in 1998 after several rounds of subsequent remodeling.

The Paya Lebar Methodist Church is renowned for its Baba Malay-language services for Peranakan Christians. From 1938 to 1968, the church served as the home of the Paya Lebar Methodist Chinese Church, which afterward moved to its current location on Upper Paya Lebar Road. Today, the church is involved in social services, offers after-school care, and fights for the rights of the blind. The Methodist Church not only established a legacy of education in Paya Lebar but also in Hougang. The school gets previously located behind the main structure of Paya Lebar Methodist Church in the present-day Covenant Centre.

Affiliation:

Given that Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Secondary) and Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Primary) are affiliated, pupils from the Primary section get precedence for admission if they receive at least 212 points after taking the Primary School Leaving Examination. The quality of applicants’ PSLE scores for that year determines a higher cut-off point for students from other schools who want to enroll in Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School. The express stream required a T-score of (not applicable)[citation needed], the Normal (Academic) stream required a T-score of 185, and the Normal (Technical) stream required a T-score of 120. However, for the 2017–18 academic years, no students from other institutions were admitted.The Methodist Church in Singapore and other Methodist schools in Singapore, such as Methodist Girls’ School, Anglo-Chinese School, Fairfield Methodist Secondary School, and Geylang Methodist Secondary School, are also connected with PLMGS(Sec). PLMGS(Sec) ladies gain a 2-point bonus for enrolling in their affiliated Junior College, Anglo-Chinese Junior College, after completing their secondary education. She then held various leadership posts at Compassvale Secondary School and St. Andrew’s Junior College addition to working for the MOE’s Curriculum Planning and Development Division. She served as the Assistant Director of the Guidance Branch at the Ministry of Education’s Student Development Curriculum Division before joining PLMGSS.
