The Church of St. Mary of the Angels is a 2004-built Roman Catholic church in Singapore. It is in the West Region of Singapore’s Bukit Batok Planning Area.

Both a Franciscan monastery and a parish community get housed in the church. Approximately 8,500 parishioners reside in the parish at this time. The Saint Mary of the Angels serves parishioners from around Singapore from Bukit Batok, Bukit Gombak, Hillview, Jurong East, and Choa Chu Kang.

It developed from a group of Franciscan friars’ work in the 1950s. The structure received two awards: Design of the Year at the first President’s Design Award in 2006 and the Religious Building Category Award from the Singapore Institute of Architects in 2004. Saint Mary of the Angels gets created by Singapore-based architects WOHA.

The Design

The Franciscan Friars’ parish church and the Church of St. Mary of the Angels were the intended users. The project has a large columbarium, a church, a Poor Clare monastery, and the St. Anthony Friary. Community and Expressing the church as an open and transparent organization are at the center of the design.

The design gets focused on an outdoor area that serves as a forecourt to the different institutions, allowing for the development of community ties in this public space. In addition to incorporating numerous pre-existing modernist structures from the 1950s, WOHA developed every aspect of the complex’s architecture, interiors, landscaping, and lighting. The design influenced the Franciscan Friars’ emphasis on outreach and environment to create a place of worship that is open and outward-looking, first to the garden and surroundings, then to the greater community.

Mass of the “Last Chance”

The parish’s population increased quickly over time, and as a result, the majority of the weekend Masses were frequently overflowing. In 2011, the Sunday 5.30 p.m. Mass reached parity in attendance with the Sunday Morning Masses, which was the final straw. To accommodate the crowd, the church felt to introduce a new Mass time. With that, the Sunday Mass at 7:15 p.m. began, with the initial goal of serving the crowd. Many parishioners and those who work shifts and cannot attend Mass at any other time on Sundays get served by it. Since then, the Mass has been at 7 o’clock.

The earliest time for an English Mass at Singapore’s Catholic churches is on Sundays at 7:00 p.m.
