You Need To Know About Tanah Merah MRT

The East-West Line’s Tanah Merah MRT Station (EW4/CG) is an above-ground point that acts as a transfer station for the EWL’s Changi Airport Branch line. It gets located between – the intersections of Bedok South Avenue 3 and Bedok Road on New Upper Changi Road. The Tanah Merah MRT station serves the Tanah Merah neighborhood and gets a steep residential area with several condos, private homes, and schools.

Meta Description:

The station name means “red soil” in Malay and comes from the red lateritic cliffs formerly visible from the sea-leveled for land reclamation works.

Process:

For Pasir Ris-bound services, a fourth track and third platform will get extended: to the Northside of the station after extension construction gets finished in 2024. The Changi Airport Branch line would have an additional middle platform, allowing trains to run more often.

The present Changi Airport Branch line (Tanah Merah—Expo—Changi Airport) will be transformed into part of the Thomson-East Coast Line by roughly 2040, with the TEL – extended from Sungei Bedok to Changi Airport Terminal 5. Tanah Merah MRT would become the Thomson-East Coast Line’s eventual terminal.

Concourse

A ticket concourse gets placed on the ground level of the station. It includes faregates for automatic fee collection and access between the station’s paid and unpaid sectors – and at least one bidirectional wide-swinging gate for passengers in wheelchairs, those carrying heavy objects, or those traveling with prams.

Commuters can buy tickets for single or many travels through General Ticketing Machines like TransitLink Add Value Machines, accept contactless card transactions. The station office serves as a Passenger Service Centre, where commuters may inquire about travel options. The station concourse has unpaid sections where you may find retail stores and restrooms.

A Short History

The station opened on November 4, 1989, with two island platforms for East-West Line trains in both directions and an unused middle track in its current state. The Changi Airport Branch line began operating as a shuttle service between Tanah Merah and Expo on January 10, 2001.

After the inauguration of Changi Airport station on February 25, 2002, services from Boon Lay began, with alternative Eastbound trains ending at either Pasir Ris or Changi Airport. Changi Airport Branch Line train services have stood converted into a shuttle service between Tanah Merah and Changi Airport since July 2003. Due to much lower demand on the Branch line comparing to Simei, Tampines, and Pasir Ris.

Tanah Merah station gets located on New Upper Changi Road between – intersections of Bedok South Avenue 3/Tanah Merah Kechil Road and Tanah Merah Kechil Avenue, on the border of the Bedok North and Bedok South planning subzones.

Future Perspectives

To reduce wait times – on the Changi Airport branch line – a third platform and fourth track get now built at Tanah Merah station. In the middle – a potential fourth track is being built north of the station for Eastbound East-West Line services, leaving the – middle two rails; for Changi Airport train services, allowing trains to arrive and depart at the station at shorter intervals.

LTA officially announced the project on August 25, 2014, with a target completion date of 2024.
