Arts & Culture Programme

The CHIJ Katong Convent Arts and Culture Programme (A&C) is a unique leadership program for students passionate about the arts and who want to serve as champions and leaders for the arts in Kansas City. The A&C Program is the pinnacle of the Communicative, Performing, and Visual Arts (CPVA) framework, and it gets conceived from the school’s rich tradition in the arts, which has flourished since the 1960s. Through the approach of Exposure, Empowerment, and Enactment, the A&C empowers selected students to take on artistic leadership roles.

Book and Music Week

Katong Convent’s main arts event is Book and Music Week (BMW). It is an annual tradition that began 40 years ago and honors literature and the arts as an investigation and extension of classroom learning. Katong Convent girls are allowed to shine with their God-given abilities regardless of their CCA. Every student has the opportunity to participate in the creation, presentation, response, and curation of the festival’s diverse art forms and activities. BMW is a much-loved tradition in Katong Convent that is lovingly remembered by all who have lived and breathed the BMW experience as a student here. BMW gets founded by Mrs. Marie Bong, previous Principal of Katong Convent.

Drama Elective Programme

The Drama Elective Program expands students’ knowledge of drama through practical and theoretical study, including human behavior through dramatic forms and skill development through theatrical presentations. The curriculum teaches students how to construct theatrical pieces that elicit powerful emotions in the audience to persuade them to think about their message. Students are introduced to many genres of theatre, creative processes, vocations, and practices in the theatrical business through artist-led seminars and performance experiences while looking for their unique form of expression. DEP students may expect a well-rounded, highly personalized education.

Enhanced Art Programme

The Enhanced Art Program is a MOE-sponsored Special art program for upper secondary students that offers the ‘O’ Level Art topic. It is held at Katong Convent. Students in the EAP join in events with other EAP schools in Singapore to deepen their love and study of visual art with the usual general art program for upper secondary students.

School Crest

The school badge worn by IJ girls on their uniforms is the same as the badge worn by IJ schools around the globe. A gold-edged silver band surrounds the red shield. A silver rosary is on the right, while a golden distaff and spindle are on the left. A garland of marguerites encircles the shield, topped with a gold cross. ‘Simple in Virtue – Steadfast in Duty,’ reads the English motto on the badge.

The Virgin Mary’s Rosary represents communication with God, while the distaff and spindle represent women’s work. Marguerites Garland extols the virtue of simplicity, which is the most endearing quality in a young girl.
