Geylang
Geylang, also known as Geylang Serai, is a neighborhood in Singapore’s Central Area. The lively shophouses, red-light district, foreign workers’ housing, and countless karaoke bars in Geylang reveal a different side of modern Singapore. Geylang’s shophouses have been spared from renovation, preserving their 1970s appearance. Along Geylang Road, several well-known eateries have opened. Prostitution is legal in this portion of the city-state, known as the red-light district. Hundreds of brothels dot the landscape, each with a massive house number painted a brilliant red. Geylang Road also serves as a primary link between the city center and the eastern suburbs of Singapore.
Eunos
Eunos, sometimes called Geylang East, is a Malay village that used to be known as Kampong Melayu. Kampong Eunos gets eventually renamed in honor of its founder, Mohammad Eunos Abdullah, the chairman and co-founder of the Singapore Malay Union. The region was founded in the late 1920s when Eunos petitioned the British government for a block of land dedicated only to the Malays. Public transportation and the Eunos MRT station serve the region effectively. The neighborhood has HDB estates with lower prices, attracting people who are usually young singles. In the eastern portion of Eunos, near the Kembangan area, condominiums and terraced houses attract families and expatriates.
Kembangan
Another Malay community in the district is Kembangan, which means “extension” in Malay. This area has two villages, Kampong Kembangan and Kampong Pachitan, but both get razed to make room for area redevelopment in the 1980s. Compared to the surrounding Eunos and Chai Chee estates, this neighborhood has fewer amenities, such as Kembangan Plaza and Kampong Kembangan Community Club. There are now no public government schools, and most of the schools in the region have closed in the Kembangan estate. Kembangan is a high-end residential district located between Bedok and Geylang that includes several residential areas and high-rise condominiums. Kembangan MRT station, on the East-West Line, serves the development.
Paya Lebar
Paya Lebar is a district in Singapore with the same Malay name as Toa Payoh, which means “great swamp” in Hokkien. It is a region that has seen significant urban regeneration and is now characterized by technology and advancement, with offices and high-tech factories thriving. The former SingPost building gets turned into Singapore’s first e-commerce mall, and many more shopping malls are in the works, transforming Paya Lebar into a gigantic retail powerhouse.
