Eden is a luxurious residential property that rises 20-stories up over Draycott Park, which is an unassuming side street that is located right off of Orchard Road. The apartment complex is a project undertaken by Hong Kong-based real estate developer Swire Properties and it represents an interesting take on tropical residential living that features none of the usual allusions that people might expect.
Eden was designed by decorated, London-based Heatherwick Studio in collaboration with Swire Properties. Established by world-renowned designer Thomas Heatherwick, the company is responsible for producing outstanding and innovative architectural developments such as the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010. Another project that gained a lot of applause was the London Olympic Cauldron 2012.
Heatherwick has also garnered critical praise for the work done on the visionary “Vessel”, which can be found at the Hudson Yards development over in New York. That particular project was described by Fortune Magazine as “Manhattan’s answer to the Eiffel Tower.” Eden is Heatherwick’s first and only residential development project over in Asia.
According Eden’s chief designer, the world-renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick, the project was a precious chance to “to create something distinct for Singapore to contrast against a skyline already filled with angular steel and glass towers.”
True to his word, Heatherwick has given Eden’s balconies curtains composed of greenery that provides the facility with the vibe of a vertical garden, while also lending the structure some elegance. The balconies, which resemble large seeds, are brimming with life, thanks to the elephant ears, torch ginger and tree ferns hanging from them that give the structure an ideal blend of impeccable architecture and nature. Speaking of the structure, Eden also features a subtle science-fiction element with the blades resembling the wings of a giant spacecraft, opening to reveal its organic heart.
Every single floor on the Eden has an apartment measuring 282 square meters in size. The designer moved the service core and then, broke the floor plan into quadrants that has a huge central living area flanked by a number of bedrooms and embraced by open spaces providing you a pathway to nature.
Aesthetically, Eden takes some visual cues from another project of Heatherwick on the island — The Learning Hub at the Nanyang Technological University. However, the spatial setup of the Eden provides natural ventilation to flow through every unit while still being able to give the unit owner privacy. The robust landscaping that envelops Eden will also substantially shield both the property and residents from the tropical heat.
Residents of Eden will definitely enjoy the spacious, luxurious living space that is complimented by lush, bespoke hanging gardens that provide an exquisite and private garden up in the sky, thus ensuring that vital connection to nature in the middle of the urban metropolitan.
Eden places an emphasis on how to best live in a tropical atmosphere in collaboration with the innate spirit of Singapore and of Mother Nature as well. Heatherwick succeeds in doing this by taking the comfort, space, ventilation and wonder of Singapore’s well-known colonial “Black and White” residences and combines those with the benefits of living in an elevated apartment that has awe-inspiring views and complete security and privacy.
The conventional floor plate, which is usually seen in the many residential towers that are made of steel and glass in Singapore, has been transformed, replaced by expansive, light-filled spaces that boast of windows on three sides, thereby giving residents the sheer comfort and luxury of having natural ventilation pass by the residential area, as well as a stunning view of Singapore, thanks to the sublime balcony. Every balcony found at Eden is also positioned alternately so that they produce double-height spaces.
Prospective owners may be able to check out Eden is one of Singapore’s most revered areas — District 10 — which gives residents the rare chance to stay in a sought-after yet serene neighborhood. And while privacy and tranquility remains one of Eden’s most valued characteristics, the residential property still manages to give residents utmost convenience with its close proximity to many amenities.
The island’s most famous shopping boulevard — Orchard Road — is just a five minute walk away, which means anything and everything a resident could be want could be had at a moment’s notice. And then, Singapore’s finest members-only institutions such as the Tanglin Club and the American Club are also right at the Eden’s doorstep.
All told, whether it is world-famous brands, top-notch schools, revered restaurants or even heritage sites like the Singapore Botanic Gardens, every need or demand can be fulfilled if you are living at Eden.
