Chung Cheng High School Main, located at 60 Kim Yam Road, was established in 1939 as an all-boys school. The school’s concept was “Excellence in Education for All,” and students from all walks of life. The school gets forced to close due to the Japanese invasion of Singapore in 1942. After the Second World War, the school reopened in 1945 and enrolled female students. In the inaugural National Examination, held in 1947, the school came out on top among Singapore schools. A 14-acre tract of property on Goodman Road gets bought for a new campus to handle the growing student body. Chung Cheng High School Main relocated to this new location, but the previous school on Kim Yam Road remained open. The school celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2014. In the same year, the school’s Entrance Arch and Administration Building (Zhulin Building) get designated as national landmarks, with then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officiating at a ceremony. The school’s 80th anniversary get commemorated in 2019 with a series of homecoming festivities. On April 13, 2019, the Minister of Education, Mr Ong Ye Kung, introduced a new monument beside the school lake in a ceremony.
