Bukit Panjang MRT Station is the western terminus of the Downtown Line (DTL), as well as an interchange station with the Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT). Located near the Bukit Panjang town centre, the DTL station is built underground, underneath Upper Bukit Timah Road, while the BPLRT station is overground, next to Petir Road.

Bukit Panjang means “long hill” in Malay, which gets its name from the range of hills stretching from Mandai to the north to Bukit Timah to the south. The station serves the Bukit Panjang housing estate, along with residential developments and shopping malls in the vicinity of Bukit Panjang Town Centre. Two lines are connected by an unpaid link owing to construction limitations. Commuters transferring between lines would have to tap out of the network, walk along a public linkway and re-enter the network, with a transfer window of 15 minutes.

We partnered the National University Health System (NUHS) to pioneer the Patient Appointment Consolidation (PAC) program, which won the overall Excellence Champion Medal in the National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Medals in 2017. In 2022, we were also awarded with the National Healthcare Innovation and Productivity Medal for the Community Response Team (CRT) project, and a joint-hospital Improving Mobility Via Exoskeletons (IMOVE) program.

The church’s feast day on May 1 honours St Joseph, the worker. The link is poignant as its first parishioners were the coolies and labourers of the pepper, gambier and rubber plantations. In 1846, Fr Anatole Mauduit started a chapel as a jungle mission outpost to cater to the Christians in the Kranji interior so that they need not make the long trek into town to attend Mass. In 1853, the parish community resettled into its current location, moving from Kranji to Bukit Timah for a fresh start, hoping to leave behind the travails of harassment and persecution by the secret societies, a decline in agricultural productivity, and the ever-present danger from man-eating tigers.

Fr Joachim Teng, who served at St Joseph’s Church from 1949 to 1972, started the St Joseph’s Farm where he tended fruit trees and dairy cows as a source of income for parish maintenance. He also oversaw construction to expand the existing church building to include a sanctuary and new wings. The new building seated four times as many people as the old one. Fr Teng also started an annual fun fair on Parish Feast Day to raise money, launching a tradition that is still carried out today.

Shanmugam – it was he who initially started Murugan Hill Temple at Lam San Village. He was a plumber attached to the RAF. He spotted a small divine structure that resembled a shrine of Sri Muneeswaran and related the discovery at a local Staff Union meeting. Mr. Nagalinggam, the Ex-President of the temple, was also a member then.

In 1962, with the support of villagers and RAF employees, the first pooja was offered to mark the founding of the shrine. A year later, while clearing the surrounding area, a fire that was started spread to neighbouring huts. A report was made by the landowner and all activities centered around the shrine ceased. No prayers were held and it fell into a state of neglect.
